Once upon a time in far-off San Francisco was born a child with joy in his heart and music in his soul. This book chronicles the highs and lows and victories of this tiny spirt. The timing was questionable as he made his appearance just before the Great American Depression. As time passed, he discovered a sanctuary from the humdrum of the life that surrounded him . . . motion pictures. Saturday matinees were spent in a fantasy land where dreams and hopes were realized and when money for the Saturday matinee was not available, he would retreat into the movie in his head imagining himself in white tie and tails dancing with a beautiful partner on the wing of a plane headed for Rio or perhaps a bit of terpsichore in a beautiful field in Ireland.
Films became the blueprint from which he would build his future. This book is a documentary of his journey ... my life.
Go see the movie in your head. Imagine, believe, create.

I knew Bill when I was an actor in Calif. in the sixties and seventies. Our favorite meeting place was Cyrano's in Hollywood on Sunset blvd. Bill was a regular and a nice man.He was my first Commercial Agent with Dick Barth and they were excellent. Bill's book is a wonderful insight into the very heart of the success story of a deserving man.He gives a seminar of his desires, plans, experiences and emotions in the zany world of representing actors.Always mindful of the value of loyalty seasoned with integrity.I wasn't a close friend of Bill's,regretably, but we were always friendly mainly because of his open friendliness. His book is filled with wonderful stories of his journey into his own heart. His youth, family, Military service, and career successes. Also the women who taught him much. A must read. I Wonder What Became of Me eBook William D Cunningham Reviews
These words come from the introduction to the memoir of William D. Cunningham in this engaging book I WONDER WHAT BECAME OF ME. The comments here refer to the hardcover book format that is available. That is an important note because a good portion of this rollercoaster ride of a life is devoted to photographs of Bill Cunningham and the people he encountered in his life who assisted him in achieving his ideals. It makes for a terrific scrapbook of the family of heritage of Cunningham as well a travelogue from the Depression to the present. For once, photographs in a memoir are additive instead of self-congratulatory.
But on to content. For those to whom the name of Bill Cunningham doesn't ring a bell, don't neglect enjoying this book because you're not 'in the know' this is a book of Americana that is suffused with rich memories for the author and reminders of how the last decades have altered us. Cunningham grew up poor in the streets of San Francisco - not aware of his 'plight' because his attitude was and continues to be positive. He felt the Depression Years, joined the military and fought in WW II, stepped back into civilian life, pursued his career as a singer, became involved with those people who live in the show business world and in time he created The Cunningham Agency - and artist agency that supported the careers of talented people, causing them to absorb the joie de vivre attitude and the 'never give up' philosophy that has been the hallmark of Cunningham's colorful career. We meet the three wives of his life (as well another significant other) and hear all the chatter about the people who surrounded Cunningham in his successful climb to the top (he retired in 1989).
In order to give the reader a sense of the style of his writing as well as a fine summation of the book, the following is abstracted from the last chapter 'So there you have it. I was a street kid from San Francisco who learned a lot about life on those streets. I never finished high school. I became a professional singer, and then, not wanting to become the oldest living group singer in the business, gave up my career in music and formed a commercial artists agency that became the most successful of its kind in the county, if not the world'. No, this is not the great American novel nor is it meant to be Cunningham was not trained as a writer and his style of writing is conversational and at times a bit heavy on the braggadocio. But what the reader comes away with from reading (and looking at) this ebullient memoir is a sense of optimism. At this point in Cunningham's life he is a supporter of the misbegotten with the message that everything is possible if you really want it (with a bow to the spiritual thrown in for good measure). Grady Harp, August 12
Having been born in San Francisco in the late 50's I have always wondered what it would have been like to have been born their at an earlier time. Author William D Cunningham provided me with that answer. Cunningham was born and raised in San Francisco during the depression era. Cunningham paints an interesting portrait of life growing up in San Francisco in the 30's 40's and 50`s in what was then called the 50`s Butchertown section of San Francisco.
Cunningham born into a poor but hard working family talks about the financial struggles of the time and the friends he met at an early age with a kind of fondness. Imagine having to struggle to get together 5 cents to see a movie. So different then today,s society where kids get handed so much.
Cunningham spends the majority of the book talking about his attempts successes and failures to make it in the entertainment field. His greatest accomplishment in his eyes though is the business he created after his attempts to make it in the entertainment industry, his talent agency. Cunningham talks about all phases of the entertainment industry and how it changed over the years starting in the mid 60's.
Cunningham credits himself for a lot of the changes in actors wages and representation. He talks about the changes he was responsible for a lot almost of the point of self grandeur which detracted from the reading for me somewhat but painted a part of the picture of who he is as a person.
However, I wonder what became of me also has it's upside. Cunningham talks about his love for people and the relationships he had and how deeply personal they were and are today. There are some heartbreaking moments that involve his daughter and first wife and he tells this part of the story that really humanizes himself and brings his whole story of his life, the good and bad into focus. The book for all intents and preposes ends in 1988 when he retired from the entertainment business so you don't know much about his life after that except for a quick summery.
I appreciated the historical nature of this book, both the San Francisco time period and the entertainment agency business from the mid 60's to the late 80's. Cunning ham has lived a full and busy life and this book captures that.
The editing was good and it's a quick easy and at times a heartbreaking read. This is a a 31/2 star book.
